A Lemon in Lamai

Our first impression of Sand & Sea was not good - after getting off the last flight to Samui at 11pm, we took the shuttle bus to Lamai, and the driver turned into the hotel entrance onto a sandy, rocky track that was not lit at all. We arrived at reception and received no welcome, then checked in to our Deluxe Sea View Room, which we chose as we wanted a nice bungalow looking out to the beach. what a shock we got! The floorboards creaked at every step, and the bathroom with spa was more like an outhouse, as it was outside the actual room in the heat! We convinced ourselves it would be fine if when we woke the next morning we had views of a beautiful beach - but we didn't, it was rocky and not suitable for swimming. We asked reception the next morning if there were any other rooms available, and they showed us a Junior Suite, which was in a new building that is behind the pool, but still had views of the beach, and was all brand new (the Deluxe Rooms are not new unlike their site says). This was a lot better, and not much more expensive - the bathroom was good, much more comfortable. As for everything else, the pool and surrounding area was good, the breakfas twe had included was not - fairly limited options and not replenished enough. The location is not great, Lamai is too far away from the main part of Samui as it is, and Sand & Sea is a walk from the main stretch of Lamai Beach. If we went back to Samui we would look for somewhere at Chaweng that is more convenient and on a nicer beach - this would obviously be more expensive though. If you are looking at Sand & Sea for a romantic getaway I would not recommend, for a family or budget travellers then maybe consider if you stay in a Junior Suite and want to be away from the busy parts of Samui.
